History
Brett Kennedy
and Marc Chavez originated Platinum Sounds in 2002. It was going to be named KC Platinum Sounds, K for Kennedy,
C for Chavez. Brett and Marc were close friends planning to enter a business partnership. As some of you well know, that is
not always a great idea. We were co-workers at Kings County Office of Education in Hanford. We went to clubs to scout the
local DJs and critique them. Marcs street name was Chavo. We thought it would be catchy to be called
Chavo and Bravo, hence the name DJ Bravo. Chavo was known to be a clown so he would be on the microphone
as an emcee. Bravo, who is more reserved, would specialize in music and mixing. We would have been a great tandem but it was
not to be. When Marc left KCOE, he concentrated his efforts on his drum playing skills and began playing live music locally
with his band Revolution 5. When Marc left, Brett began to purchase equipment piece by piece until he
was able to put together a nice sound. He drove back and forth to downtown Los Angeles to purchase equipment for wholesale
prices at Hollywood DJ. His first few gigs were without lighting. When he finally purchased lights, they were par cans that
were sound activated. Par Cans are primitive to todays disc jockey lighting standards. They serve well for small events.
After 2 months of no bookings, Brett went to scout DJs at the Fresno area nightclubs to see how to improve
his set up. After talking to some of the disc jockeys, he realized how naive he was about advertising and marketing. More
investments and risks had to be taken to get results. Since then, Platinum Sounds has added an extra 18 subwoofer, lighting
controller, sound effects processor, fog machines, more lighting, and a 10 ft. trussing stand. It is already paid off with
regular bookings at the local high schools in Kings County.
